Artificial intelligence · Embryo assessment

AI-Assisted Embryo Selection

When several embryos develop, the question is not simply “which one looks better?”. Developmental timing, cell-division patterns, blastocyst morphology and the patient’s clinical information are assessed together. Artificial intelligence can add a decision-support layer that helps organise and rank these complex data more consistently.

  • Non-invasive data Analysis based on standard images or time-lapse records.
  • More consistent ranking The same model applies the same assessment criteria across embryos.
  • Specialist oversight The final transfer decision remains with the physician and embryology team.

An AI embryo score is not a genetic diagnosis. It does not guarantee implantation, pregnancy or live birth, and it does not replace specialist assessment.

Every embryo tells a different story

In your journey towards parenthood, we do not want to reduce the available information about an embryo to a single image.

The embryo-transfer decision is one of the most sensitive stages of treatment. We understand the hope attached to every embryo, so we do not see technology as merely a sophisticated score on a screen.

Our aim is to support the embryologist’s experience with more structured imaging and developmental data and to explain, within a clearer clinical framework, why one embryo may be prioritised over another.

01

A more comprehensive assessment

Where the system allows, developmental timing can be considered alongside a single-day image.

02

Reduced variation in interpretation

Embryos can be compared using the same algorithmic criteria within the validated system.

03

Documentation and quality review

Scores can support retrospective comparison of embryo, transfer and laboratory outcomes.

04

Personalised prioritisation

AI output is interpreted together with age, treatment history, PGT results when available and the clinical plan.

Core concept

What is AI-assisted embryo selection?

This approach uses algorithms to analyse embryo images and, on some platforms, time-lapse developmental sequences. Based on patterns learned from historical embryo datasets with known outcomes, a model may generate a score related to a defined developmental or implantation-related outcome.

The term “embryo selection” does not mean that the system makes the transfer decision by itself. The embryologist makes the final prioritisation by considering morphology, developmental day, clinical history, any available PGT result and the overall transfer plan.

Important distinction: A high image-based score does not show that an embryo is chromosomally normal. A lower score also does not prove that an embryo has no implantation or reproductive potential.

Multiple data points in the transfer decision

Embryo selection is not a single score; it is the interpretation of biological and clinical information together.

Embryo development is dynamic. Morphology, division timing, unusual cleavage patterns, genetic status and uterine factors do not operate in isolation. AI can standardise part of the imaging data within this chain; it does not explain the entire treatment outcome.

01

Fertilisation

Normal fertilisation is assessed and the initial developmental record is created.

02

Development

Cell divisions and progression towards the blastocyst stage are monitored.

03

Prioritisation

Morphology, developmental timing and the AI score are interpreted together.

04

Transfer plan

The final decision is made in the context of the patient’s characteristics and clinical strategy.

Laboratory workflow

How is AI-assisted embryo assessment performed step by step?

The workflow may use static-image analysis or time-lapse sequences. The type of data available depends on the platform and the laboratory’s validated protocol.

01
Day 1

Fertilisation is confirmed

Pronuclear appearance and the starting developmental record are documented.

02
Culture

Development is imaged

Embryos are imaged at selected stages or at defined intervals using time-lapse technology.

03
Quality

Data are standardised

Image quality, focus and timing information are checked according to the system requirements.

04
Analysis

An AI score is generated

The model produces an estimate based on morphology and, where applicable, morphokinetic patterns.

05
Specialist decision

The embryologist interprets the result

The score is compared with blastocyst grade, developmental day and relevant clinical information.

06
Clinical plan

Transfer or cryopreservation is planned

The final plan is made according to informed consent and the overall treatment strategy.

Information within images and time

What may AI assess during embryo development?

The variables used by a model vary by platform. Some systems analyse only a blastocyst image, while others assess a sequence extending from fertilisation towards blastocyst development.

A model’s performance is linked to the population, imaging system and data on which it was developed and validated. Equivalent performance should not automatically be assumed in every laboratory.

01

Blastocyst morphology

Features such as expansion, inner cell mass and trophectoderm appearance may be considered.

02

Division timing

The timing of transitions to two, three, four and subsequent cell stages may be analysed.

03

Cleavage patterns

Unusual developmental patterns, including direct or reverse cleavage, may be identified.

04

Fragmentation and symmetry

Cell size, visible fragmentation and structural organisation may contribute to assessment.

05

Developmental pace

The day of blastocyst formation and the overall pace of development during culture may be considered.

06

Complex image patterns

Models may identify pixel-level or texture relationships that are difficult to describe individually by eye.

The right expectations for the right use

Conventional embryo grading and AI-assisted prioritisation

Assessment area Standard approach Additional technology layer
Data source Morphological assessment at selected observation points. Analysis of a static image or multiple time-lapse frames, depending on the system.
Consistency Interpretation may vary even among experienced embryologists. The same model applies the same criteria to technically suitable images.
Timing information May be limited to routine observation points. Time-lapse systems can incorporate developmental timing into the assessment.
Genetic information Morphology does not reliably establish chromosomal status. An AI image score is also not a PGT result.
Final decision Made by the embryologist and physician. Still made by the clinical and embryology team; AI provides decision support only.
Personalised use

When may additional embryo-ranking support be considered?

Potential usefulness depends on the number of embryos available, imaging infrastructure, the clinical question and the validated scope of the model being used.

01

Several transferable blastocysts

It may provide an additional standardised data point when prioritising among available embryos.

02

Cycles using time-lapse culture

It may help analyse a developmental timeline systematically where the selected model supports time-lapse data.

03

Previous implantation failure

It does not identify the cause by itself, but may be considered as one element within a broader reassessment.

04

Embryos without PGT

It may standardise morphology and developmental data, but it does not provide genetic information.

05

Laboratory quality review

It may contribute to consistency between assessments and retrospective review of outcomes.

06

Personalised transfer planning

It may be interpreted together with age, uterine factors and previous treatment results.

Transparent medical communication

What does this technology not do?

An AI score is only one part of clinical decision-making. Its limits should be clear so that it does not create unrealistic expectations or unnecessary anxiety.

  • It does not show that an embryo is chromosomally normal and does not replace PGT.

  • It does not guarantee implantation, clinical pregnancy or live birth.

  • It does not independently explain uterine, immunological, genetic or other clinical factors.

  • It does not prove that a lower-scoring embryo has no reproductive potential.

  • It does not replace the transfer decision made jointly by the embryology and clinical team with the patient.

The Ventus IVF approach

The highest score is not the goal; the most appropriate and explainable transfer plan for you is.

At Ventus IVF, we do not present an AI score as a stand-alone “success score”. We interpret it together with the embryo’s developmental day, morphology, any available PGT result, previous transfers and endometrial preparation.

If scores conflict with one another or do not fit the clinical picture, the final decision is reasoned by the specialist team. Technology does not take over human responsibility; it is used to support better documentation and clearer communication.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about AI-assisted embryo selection

These answers are for general information. The technical scope of the algorithm and the characteristics of your embryo cohort should be assessed together.

Ask about your situation
How does artificial intelligence select an embryo?

It analyses patterns in embryo images or time-lapse sequences and generates a probability-based score. Final prioritisation is performed by the embryology and clinical team.

Does a high score guarantee pregnancy?

No. A score is an estimate related to the outcome targeted by the model. Implantation and live birth are influenced by many other factors.

Does an AI score show genetic health?

No. An image-based score is not a chromosomal analysis. When PGT is clinically indicated, it is a separate genetic testing process.

Is a lower-scoring embryo automatically excluded from transfer?

No. The number of available embryos, morphology, clinical history and treatment alternatives are considered together. The score alone is not an automatic exclusion criterion.

Can AI be used without time-lapse imaging?

Some systems work with one or more blastocyst images, while others require time-lapse data. This depends on the platform being used.

Can AI assessment harm the embryo?

Image-based analysis does not directly intervene in the embryo.
