Egg donation

What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is a procedure used to provide a chance of pregnancy for couples or individuals facing infertility issues through assisted reproductive technology methods.

Egg donation is preferred when a woman is unable to use her own eggs, in cases of women experiencing age-related egg quality problems, or in couples at risk of genetic diseases. Through this method, embryos obtained from donated eggs can be transferred into the uterus of the recipient female to establish a pregnancy.

Who is Suitable for Egg Donation?

  • Early onset of menopause
  • Menopause due to surgical removal of ovaries
  • Ovarian damage following treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy
  • Presence of genetic disorders
  • Advanced age, typically beyond the age of 45
  • Insufficient ovarian reserve

How Can We Find the Right Egg Donor?

The very first step is a no-obligation online consultation with our lead in-vitro fertilisation consultant. The consultant will ask you a few questions about your medical history, explain the donation process, and answer any questions you may have.

If you decide to have a treatment with us, we will provide you with a list of required blood tests and medical exams, such as vaginal ultrasounds and cervical cancer screenings, that you can conveniently schedule near your home or workplace.

Egg and sperm donations are anonymous in Cyprus, and the clinic is not involved in the matching process. However, we can assist and guide you through the difficult process of finding the perfect donor for you.

Your partner will have to fly to Cyprus at some point to provide a sperm sample at our facility if you use his sperm. In the case of using frozen donor eggs, they will be thawed and fertilised immediately with the fresh sperm. Otherwise, the sperm sample is frozen, and we wait until the egg donor is ready for the egg retrieval to fertilise the fresh eggs with the thawed sperm. In the case of double donation (donor eggs and donor sperm), embryos are created whenever it is convenient for the laboratory and the gametes are available.

The fertilised eggs are cultured until they reach the expanded blastocyst stage and then cryopreserved or transferred. In some cases, patients opt for PGT (preimplantation genetic testing). In this case, a biopsy is performed before freezing the blastocysts.

Once a sufficient number of good-quality blastocysts are frozen, we will find a suitable date for you to travel to Cyprus for your embryo transfer. Prior to this, we organise a treatment near your home or workplace, which lasts about 16–18 days, to prepare the uterine lining. This involves a hormonal treatment with estradiol pills for 10–12 days, a vaginal ultrasound scan and a progesterone blood test, and then an additional treatment with progesterone capsules taken vaginally.

What is the process of egg donation at Ventus IVF?

Egg donation is a popular treatment method in fertility centres. A major reason for this is the postponement of motherhood plans due to career planning or unspecified health issues. Rigorous evaluation of egg donors is crucial for achieving successful outcomes. Our team assesses donors through various tests to determine the most suitable one.
